A beautifully sunny day, I stop off for a quick visit to see the Oratory of All Souls, otherwise known as Sandham Memorial Chapel, built in the 1920s in Burghclere, just south of Newbury in Hampshire. Built in brick with two side alms houses, the central chapel space is stunning, covered in murals by Stanley Spencer. He has depicted scenes from his experience of World War One as a medical orderly along the two sides with a huge central Resurrection of ordinary soldiers above the altar. A very moving experience. There is a pretty garden outside where I sit to eat some late lunch.
