Travel up to York on Thursday 4th October for an overnight stay at the Best Western Dean Court Hotel; have a super room with a bay window and view of the Minster. Enjoy drinks in the Edwardian Bluebell pub and an excellent meal at Cafe No.8. Breakfast is excellent in particular the vegetarian cooked breakfast. Although cloudy Friday 5th is dry, and I enjoy the day exploring York.
I begin with an hour in the Minster while it is still quiet, specifically the stained glass of the Great East window, finally revealed earlier in the year after 11 years of restoration. It is a thrill to see it at last, this largest mass of medieval stained glass depicting the Books of Genesis and Revelation (the beginning and end). I enjoy chatting to one of the guides who tells me some interesting facts about the window e.g. he points out where a small amount of the original lead is still in situ after 600 years. I also enjoy the Chapter house (take photos of a group of Spanish tourists at their request), the crypt and the peace of the Zouche chapel.
