Whitby Abbey

It is great to get Alex in for free (using my English Heritage life membership) to see this iconic abbey. Again, Alex makes the most of the visit by listening to the audio tour. There are a few showers and it is breezy, but this adds to the dramatic location. We have a drink and […]

A cloudier day and windy on the headland when we first arrive. We take Jacqui and Emma around the abbey museum and visitor centre first, then explore the remains of the abbey They are both impressed by the remains, the location and the long history of the site.

Returning to the abbey via the 199 steps (which are very busy, the girls do well going both up and down the steps) we watch the final 3.30pm performance of a three actor comedy version of “Dracula” set in the abbey ruins. There is a large crowd watching the almost 90 minute performance, with people […]

We really enjoy the remains of the abbey – it is a very windy day, but sunny again, not too hot. We have a quick look round the modern museum in the remains of the 17th century house. Head back into the town, enjoying chips from the famous Magpie Chip Shop, eating them on the […]

On Monday 26th we spend all day exploring Whitby, beginning with views of the town from St. Mary’s and then a look round the Abbey. A bit cloudy and cool, it gets very windy later but remains dry. Listen to the audio tour again and look round the modern exhibition in the Cholmley House Visitor […]

The weather turns as bad as it could. Stressful drive in fog, driving rain and wind. Park at the Abbey car park. The visit is spoilt by the cold and fog and rain. The drama of seeing the Abbey loom out of the fog and the fog swirl through the windows, is no compensation for […]

288i – Whitby Abbey

4 Jul , 1998

Spend a full day at Whitby in brilliant sunshine. Climb the 199 steps to St. Mary’s Church which has an amazing profusion of box pews and a triple-decker pulpit. Love it. Then we explore the Abbey. Compact remains, most impressive on the north and east sides. No references to Dracula, which is disappointing. After lunch […]
